Valentine's Day 101: The Basics

St. Valentine's Day has become the most romantic day of the year. When you want to celebrate your amorous good fortune and show your special someone that you appreciate your romantic journey together, many gift givers go to wild extremes.

However, there are some time-tested signs of affection that spice up every Valentine's Day. Every Valentine's Day celebration must include a Valentine's card. This staple is both traditional and symbolic. On February 14, 270 A.D. the priest Valentine, later to be proclaimed a Saint, sent a card to his jailer's daughter inscribing it, "From your Valentine." The good priest would be beheaded later that day. Hence, the Valentine tradition was launched.

When Geoffrey Chaucer added this romantic spin to the fairly somber Saint Valentine celebration many centuries later, the day became the year's foremost romantic holiday. Valentine's Day is now celebrated around the world. February 14th is the second largest card-giving day of the year.

No matter how big or small your Valentine treat, make sure a card is involved. Today's cards range from sentimental, humorous, amorous, poetic and some are even apologetic. It is safe to say that Valentine's cards cover every emotional possibility. Usually, Valentine's day cards include a personalised message that seals the deal and sets a tone for the day.

Flowers and candy have always been a standard gift for the day. Of late, romantic dinners have become very popular. Of course, the gals love jewelry and just as a meal may be the key to a man's heart, jewelry is a sure-fired preliminary to a very romantic splash. But, no matter what venue you take, start with a lasting memory and a personalized Valentine's Day card.

The most effective Valentine's celebrations generally reflect your romantic past as well as your future expectations. Always, be thankful and hopeful. Those two heartfelt emotions say a lot more than Happy Valentine's Day. Make sure your bond is celebrated.

If your relationship is in the early stages, keep it fun and hopeful, if your relationship is more mature, there is a reason it goes forward. Celebrate it!

Take the busyness out of the day and concentrate on romance and appreciation for your loved one. Set aside the proper amount of time, dress sharply, spend a little extra time grooming and plan on some fun late night activities. Make your Valentine's Day an annual celebration of romance.

Relax, set the tone with your card and let the good time, and romance, roll. Lasting memories are what Valentine's Day is all about.
